The West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) has decided to extend the last date for submitting online applications for the 2nd SLST Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2025. Earlier, the last date to apply was 14th July 2025, but now the Commission has asked the Education Department to allow an extra 7 days. This means candidates may get more time to apply for the exam.
This extension comes after the Commission received fewer applications than expected, especially considering that this is the first teacher recruitment exam in almost 10 years.
Why the Extension for WBSSC Teacher Recruitment 2025?
This year’s WBSSC Assistant Teacher recruitment is historic, as it marks the first large-scale recruitment drive since 2016. With 35,726 teaching vacancies up for grabs — 23,212 for Secondary level (Classes IX–X) and 12,514 for Higher Secondary level (Classes XI–XII) — expectations were high that lakhs of eligible and aspiring candidates would rush to apply.
However, reality has painted a different picture.
As of Thursday evening, only around 4.5 lakh applications have been submitted — a stark contrast to the 22 lakh applications received during the 2016 recruitment drive. Specifically:
- For Classes IX–X: 2.22 lakh applications
- For Classes XI–XII: 1.63 lakh applications

Reasons for Low Application Numbers
Lack of Trust in the Recruitment Process
Many candidates are unsure if they will get a job even after passing the exam. This is because of past recruitment scams and corruption. People are afraid that even if they qualify, their job may be canceled later.
Problems with OBC Reservation Rules
There is still confusion about how OBC reservation will be applied in this recruitment. This has made some eligible candidates stay away from applying.
Old Disqualified Candidates Reapplying
Surprisingly, over 200 people who were disqualified in the past have again applied for this recruitment. This has upset many genuine candidates and raised questions about fairness.
Technical Problems with the Website
The application process was supposed to start on 16th June at 5 PM, but the website only worked after 10:30 PM. Also, the portal was shut down for three days in June due to technical issues. This caused delays and confusion for many applicants.

The written exam is likely to be held in the first week of September 2025. So, the Commission wants to give interested candidates more time to apply. The extension is meant to help those who faced technical issues or missed the earlier deadline.
