Indian Space Research Organisation has opened a new ISRO Space Lab in Arunachal Pradesh’s Mechuka, Shi-Yomi district, with support from the Muskaan Foundation. Named the Pasang Wangchuk Sona ISRO Lab, the facility aims to boost STEM education for rural students, promote space science learning, and inspire young talent in the Northeast.
ISRO Space Lab named after Pasang Wangchuk Sona
The new facility has been named the Pasang Wangchuk Sona ISRO Space Laboratory, in memory of the late father of Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, who inaugurated the lab on August 16, 2025.
Calling it a proud and emotional moment, Sona said the lab is not just an educational space but a tribute to his father’s lifelong dedication to education. He expressed hope that the lab will encourage children to “dream bigger, explore science fearlessly, and reach for the stars.”

Key objectives of the ISRO Space Lab
The newly launched lab has been designed to:
- Provide hands-on learning opportunities in space science and technology.
- Spark curiosity, innovation, and scientific thinking among students.
- Encourage more rural youth to take up STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
- Reduce the gap between urban and rural education infrastructure in India.
Officials believe the facility will give students from remote areas access to modern scientific tools and training, helping them build careers in space research and engineering.

Arunachal Pradesh’s geographical challenges often limit access to advanced education. Setting up such a high-tech facility in Mechuka, near the India-China border, highlights ISRO’s commitment to making science education inclusive and accessible.
The space lab is expected to play a big role in nurturing local talent and creating opportunities for future scientists and innovators from the Northeast.
NE-SPARKS: A boost for Northeast students
Alongside this initiative, the North East Student Programme for Awareness, Reach and Knowledge on Space (NE-SPARKS) will allow 100 science students from each of the eight Northeastern states to visit ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru.
The programme, implemented by the North East Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC) under the Ministry of DoNER, is aimed at igniting curiosity and increasing awareness of space technology among young minds.
