The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has announced the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme 2025-26 to support talented Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who aspire to pursue higher studies abroad.
This scholarship gives financial support to those who want to do their postgraduate, PhD, or post-doctoral studies in foreign countries. It’s a great chance for tribal students to get a world-class education and build a strong future.
Purpose of the Scheme
The National Overseas Scholarship Scheme is to provide financial assistance to selected ST candidates so they can pursue their studies in internationally reputed institutions. Courses Covered Under NOS
The scholarship is available for the following programs abroad:
- Post-Graduation (Masters)
- Doctoral Studies (Ph.D.)

Number of Scholarships
Every year, 20 scholarships are awarded under this scheme:
- 17 scholarships are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
- 3 scholarships are specially reserved for students belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
This ensures that even the most marginalized tribal students have a chance to benefit from world-class education.

National Overseas Scholarship 2025-26 Financial Benefits
The NOS scheme offers a comprehensive financial package, including:
- Tuition Fees at the university abroad
- Annual Maintenance Allowance: USD 15,400
- Contingency Charges: USD 1,532
- Poll Tax and Visa Fees
- Medical Insurance
- Airfare (Economy class from India to the university and back)
- Incidental Journey Expenses
This ensures that the student can focus completely on their studies without worrying about financial constraints.

Family Income Criteria
To be eligible, the total annual income of the applicant’s family from all sources should not exceed Rs. 6 lakhs per annum. This ensures that the benefits reach truly deserving candidates from economically weaker sections of tribal society.
Admission Flexibility
Selected students are given up to 2 years after their selection to secure admission to a foreign university. This allows them ample time to find the right course and institution abroad.
Mode of Disbursement
The scholarship amount is disbursed through Indian Missions abroad (such as Indian Embassies) with the help of the Ministry of External Affairs, and later reimbursed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
