Why UGC NET Eligibility Rules Matter for 2025

You may think it is funny, but reality tells a different story. Every year, thousands of applications are rejected simply because students don’t meet the UGC NET qualification criteria or age requirements. So, if you know the rules early, you can easily avoid disqualification.

UGC NET Educational Qualification 2025

When you are planning for the UGC NET, you must have a Master’s degree from a recognized university. Yes, if you are from a distance education mode, you can apply for this. But your degree must be from a recognized university. Now coming to the marks.

General and EWS candidates need at least 55% marks. The OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender (transgender) candidates need 50%.

The most interesting one is that if you are a final-year student, you can also apply for the UGC NET. You must complete your degree within 2 years of the result.

PhD holders who finished their Master’s before 19 September 1991 get a 5% relaxation.

If you are a student with a 4-year bachelor’s degree, you must score 75% marks for eligibility for JRF/PhD admission.

Here is a brief educational qualification you need.

  • You must hold a Master’s degree from a recognized university.
  • General / EWS: 55% marks required.
  • OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Third Gender: 50% marks.
  • Final-year students can apply provisionally, but must finish their degree within 2 years of the result.
  • PhD holders who completed a Master’s before 19 Sept 1991 need only 50% marks.
  • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree with 75% marks also makes you eligible for JRF/PhD admission (not Assistant Professor).

In short, the minimum qualification for UGC NET 2025 is a Master’s degree or equivalent with the required marks. After checking your eligibility, you should also review the UGC NET Subject List 2025 with Codes to confirm which subject you can apply for in Paper II.

UGC NET Age Limit 2025

One of the most important parameters is the age limit. For Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the maximum age is 30 years. But, reserved categories and women candidates get age relaxations of up to 5 years according to the government norms. The LLM degree holders get 3 years. Ex-army and research scholars also receive special relaxations. For Assistant Professor Eligibility, there is no upper age limit at all.

Why Only 6% Qualify in UGC NET Exam?

In every session, 10 to 12 lakh candidates apply for UGC NET. But out of these, only 6–7% qualify for Assistant Professor. While less than 1% secure JRF. According to the June 2023 results, more than 9 lakh candidates appeared for UGC NET. Among them, only about 6% clear the final stage. So, you can understand that eligibility is just the starting point. You can only crack this exam if you are serious. Your preparation is everything. So start early.

You must have proper certificates (against all your qualifications and age). Just remember, almost over 10 lakh candidates appear every session, but only 6-7% qualify. So, know your eligibility first and then start preparation accordingly. If you start earlier, you have a high chance of succeeding. • Hello Madan Mohan,
As per the UGC NET 2025 eligibility criteria, candidates belonging to SC/ST categories have relaxation in minimum marks required.

For General category, a minimum of 55% marks is required in a Master’s degree or equivalent.

For SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PwD categories, the minimum required marks is 50%.

So, if you belong to SC/ST, you need to have secured at least 50% marks in your 4-year B.Sc degree or Master’s equivalent to be eligible for UGC NET 2025.
