CBSE Big Update: Two Board Exams for Class 10 Students from 2026

In a major change to school education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that from the year 2026, Class 10 students will appear for two board examinations in an academic year. This new system is being introduced as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms, which aim to reduce exam pressure and provide students with more chances to perform better.

Let’s understand what this new system means for students, parents, and schools.

Why Two Board Exams?

The National Education Policy 2020 recommended a number of changes in how board exams are conducted. One of the most important suggestions was to allow students to appear for board exams twice in one year — once as a main exam, and once as an improvement exam if needed. The goal is to make board exams less stressful, give more flexibility, and allow better performance opportunities.

CBSE has now officially decided to implement this recommendation for Class 10 students starting from 2026.

How Will the Two Exams Work?

The two board exams will be held at different times in the year:

  • First Exam (Main): Starts in mid-February 2026, just like the current schedule.
  • Second Exam (Improvement): Will be held in May 2026, after the results of the first exam are declared.

Here’s how it works:

  1. All students must appear in the first board exam. It is compulsory.
  2. Students who pass the first exam can choose to improve in up to three subjects in the second exam.
  3. If a student gets a Compartment (fail in one or two subjects), they can appear in the second exam to clear those subjects.
  4. If a student misses three or more subjects in the first exam, they will not be allowed in the second exam and must reappear next year.
  5. Students who pass through subject replacement can use the second exam to improve their marks in the failed subject.

What Will Be the Syllabus and Exam Pattern?

  • Both exams (February and May) will be based on the full syllabus of that academic year.
  • NCERT textbooks will be followed.
  • The exam format, question types, and duration will remain the same.
  • There is no reduction in the syllabus for any phase.

What About Practical Exams?

  • Practical or Internal Assessment will be done only once in the academic year — before the first board exam.
  • The same marks will be considered for both exams.

Important Dates and Result Schedule

  • First Exam (Main): 17 February 2026 to 6 March 2026
  • Result of First Exam: By 20 April 2026
  • Second Exam (Improvement): 5 May 2026 to 21 May 2026
  • Final Result after Second Exam: By 30 June 2026

Students can take provisional admission in Class XI based on the first result. Their admission will be finalized based on their second attempt (if they choose to appear again)..

Can Students Change Subjects?

  • No change in subjects will be allowed after submitting the List of Candidates (LOC) for the first exam.
  • Students may opt-out of the second exam for some subjects, but new subjects cannot be added.
  • Limited subject changes may be allowed in the second exam only if the student didn’t appear for that subject in the first exam.

What About Special Cases?

  • Sports Students: If their exam date clashes with sports events, they can appear in the second exam.
  • Winter-Bound Schools: Can choose to appear in either the first or the second exam.
  • CWSN Students (Children with Special Needs): Will continue to receive the same support in both exams.

How Will Marks Be Shown in the Marksheet?

The final mark sheet (issued after the second exam) will show:

  • Marks from first and second board exams
  • Marks from practical/internal assessments
  • Grades
  • Best score out of the two exams

Only one Mark Sheet cum Passing Certificate will be given — after the second exam.

Other Key Points to Remember

  • Students must appear in the first exam. It is not optional.
  • No special exam will be held under any circumstances.
  • All exam centers will remain the same for both attempts.
  • Merit Certificates will be given only after the second exam.
  • Students who fail in all subjects or do not attend the exam will be marked under “Essential Repeat” and must appear next year.
  • CBSE will provide facilities like revaluation and photocopies of answer sheets only after the second exam.

What Should Students and Parents Do?

This new system gives students more control over their performance. Instead of being stressed over one final exam, they now get a second chance. Here’s what students and parents should keep in mind:

  • Take the first exam seriously, but know you have another chance.
  • Use the gap between results and the second exam to prepare well.
  • Discuss with your teachers which subjects to improve in, if needed.
  • Stay updated with official CBSE notifications.
